Lake Wylie, South Carolina, is named after the two Wylie brothers, who first conceived a plan to build a hydroelectric station in the area to furnish power to a textile mill in a nearby town. The station was built at India Hook Shoals and incorporated into the Catawba Power Company. The Catawba River is named after a Native American Indian tribe who were the first to live in the area. The Native Americans called themselves Yap Ye, which translates to “People of the River.” Because the town is located near the river, a wide variety of fun family activities centers around the large bodies of water, such as swimming, fishing, and boating.
